Possessing wisdom is obviously a big thing to God.
The Bible has some pretty incredible things to say about the importance of our obtaining it.
Proverbs 4:7 tells us that “wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom!”
Proverbs 8:11 tells us that “wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it!” Wow!
The way Proverbs 16:16 says it is, “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold!”
But God tells us something monumental about what it actually takes to tap into this tremendously important virtue in Proverbs 18:1. He tells us, “Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.”
In other words, if we’ll ever really take wisdom into our possession, we must first possess a “desire” for it that is so intense, we are willing to “separate” ourselves from anything and everything that would interfere with that pursuit.
In contrast, the next verse (Pro. 18:2) says, “A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.” In other words, the fool, on the other hand, has only one pursuit in his heart, and it isn’t for God’s wisdom! It’s “that his heart may discover itself.”
How many fools (God’s identification, not mine) have “LOST” themselves in their misguided quest to “FIND” themselves? Allowing our heart to “discover itself” is always an invitation to disaster! Instead, we have been instructed to “keep [our] heart with all diligence” (Prov. 4:23). God is clear: we need to “KEEP” (guard and protect) our heart, not to “FIND” it!
Oh, may our heart be directed to God today, that we might discover His wisdom... as opposed to being directed toward our sorry selves, that we might discover the wisdom of this world!
